Jeff’s journey through life began with a kidney condition at birth. Despite his condition, Jeff led a fulfilling life managing his family’s laundry and dry cleaning business for almost 13 years. Over time, Jeff’s heath declined, and it became challenging to maintain the demands of work. A combination of health problems and a poor economy ultimately forced his business to close down. Jeff tried his best to keep a positive attitude while hoping for a better future.
After more than fourteen years of dialysis, Jeff was matched for a kidney transplant, and he made a full recovery. Jeff had never been the type of person to stay at home, so after only three months of recovery, he was eager to get out of the house and begin his new life. However, without his business, and having not experienced the employment process for so long, Jeff felt lost. His surgery limited the types of jobs he was able to apply for. With little experience outside of the laundry business, Jeff needed help finding the right job for him.
Jeff was referred to Goodwill to begin job training. First, he selected a specific job skill that he wanted to learn. With an interest in computers and current software programs, he selected Goodwill’s Computer Skills Training class. His proficiency level increased so quickly that he was able to help other students in the class.
With the help of Goodwill’s job placement specialists, Jeff began to improve his interviewing skills, while learning how to properly fill out a job application. After successfully accomplishing his job placement preparation at Goodwill, he was ready to return to work.
Goodwill was committed to helping Jeff find permanent employment and helped him gain employment at the GSA retail store in the customer service center at Hickam Air Force Base. Jeff continues to build on his computer skills and thoroughly enjoys his work.
Although a modest man, Jeff swells with pride as he tells of the many customers and coworkers who have commented on his exceptional performance. He credits Goodwill with giving him the opportunities to move on to the next phase of his life.
Jeff has triumphed through circumstances that may have left others disheartened. He has at last found his place in the workforce and in life. Goodwill provided him the encouragement and support he needed. With a second chance at life and career advancement in his future, Jeff looks forward to a promising tomorrow. In recognition of his accomplishments, Jeff was rewarded the Rehabilitant of the Year Award by the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, State of Hawaii.
