After experimenting with alcohol and drugs in college, Rick became addicted and dropped out of school. Although he acquired a job in the construction business, his addiction affected his work and he was fired. Rick turned to selling drugs and burglary to maintain his habit.
As a result of his drug use, Rick had a heart attack. While in the hospital, he was arrested for an outstanding warrant and sentenced to prison to four years. It was during his incarceration that Rick realized that he needed to get control of his life.
In preparation for life outside of prison, Rick was sent to Job Connections, a program for incarcerated individuals who are eligible for parole. The program provides support and services to ex-offenders transitioning into the workforce.
Goodwill staff taught him how to search for a job, to prepare for interviews, and helped him regain his confidence.
Rick reached his potential by receiving his associate’s degree, and is earning credits towards his career goal to be a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) as a volunteer at drug court.
Rick has set his priorities to achieve his goals. “I’m just taking my life back,” says Rick, “My financial life, spiritually, my connections with my family, I’m just taking it all back.”
