Sustainability

imageBeing green is at the heart of Goodwill’s philosophy.

You may not realize it, but when you shop or donate your gently used items to Goodwill, you set in motion a whole series of earth-friendly activities. Every item you donate or purchase at a Goodwill store is one less item thrown away.

By recycling items through your donations and purchases, we reuse viable resources, and reduce waste on our planet.

Additionally, your donated items create many layers of value. By providing revenue to support our mission and programs, your donated items help people in your community to become more self-sufficient and reach their full potential.

Other ways Goodwill helps to keep our community green is through its HI-5 redemption centers.

Did you know that through donation centers, stores, HI-5 redemption centers and other Goodwill services, more than 9.3 million pounds of clothing and other items were kept from going into landfills in 2008? These materials include:
  • 6,143,379 pounds of donated goods
  • 2,711,385 pounds of HI-5 recyclable containers
  • 521,328 pounds of glass, newspaper, and cardboard
