Goodwill Industries of Hawaii introduces Mālama Moe


FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 1, 2009 - Goodwill Industries of Hawaii introduces Mālama Moe, a free program for low income residents on the Big Island who want to start their own business. The program is a series of classes that will guide participants to “Take Care of their Dreams.” Orientation for the program is Tuesday, September 15th from 5-7pm at the Goodwill Career Center located at 200 Kanoelehua Avenue, Suite 102 in Hilo. Following orientation, classes will be held every Tuesday in the same location from 5-8pm, running from September 22 through December 15, 2009.
The Mālama Moe program is open to anyone who has an idea for a new business who is over the age of 18 and is considered low income by the State of Hawaii (for 2009, the definition of ‘low income’ is earning no more than $18,690 per year in a household of one, $25,140 in a household of two, $31,590 in a household of three or $38,040 in a household of four). Participants will need to bring their Driver’s License or State Identification Card, Social Security Card, EBT (if applicable) and proof of income (if applicable) to register for the program.

Goodwill Industries of Hawaii will provide hands-on learning, including assistance with business start-up and continued business support for the first year of the participant’s new venture’s operation. Participants in the Mālama Moe program will develop a skill set that will include time management, organization, eCommerce, business accounting, tax filing and business registration. Participants will also be introduced to local bankers, will open a business banking account and will learn about potential funding resources.
